Mole Removal

Safely & Effectively remove unwanted moles

Many people refer to a mole as any dark spot or irregularity in the skin. Some people are born with moles, other moles appear over time.  Sun exposure also plays a role in the development of moles and may even play a role in the development of atypical, or dysplastic moles.

Although laser removal has been tried for moles, it is not usually the method of choice for most deep moles because the laser light doesn’t penetrate deeply enough. Moles (or nevi) can be removed by two surgical methods:

  • Excision (cutting ) followed by stitches and
  • Excision with cautherization ( a tool is used to burn away the mole)

Dr. Alexander Doan may choose excision with or without stitches, depending on the depth of the mole and the type of cosmetic outcome desired.

Risks of mole removal methods vary from infection to anesthetic allergy and nerve damage. One of the most common difficulties after mole removal is scarring. Although, NuSilk removes mole cosmetically, we give you an idea of the type and location of a scar after mole removal before you make your decision about removing it.

Mole Removal Preparation

  • The area to be treated will be cleaned with alcohol and betadine.
  • Then the area will be numbed with anesthetic such as lidocaine with epineprine in order help stop bleeding.
  • A sterile drape is placed over the area to be treated.
  • Dr. Doan takes a scalpel or skin biopsy excision and shaves the mole off flush or slightly below the skin level.
  • If needed, stitches are put on the upper surface of the skin ( these don’t absorb and will be removed later).
  • The area is cleaned with hydrogen peroxide or alcohol to remove any debris and followed by a topical antibiotic and then bandage.
